Writing Prompts and Challenges posts
Writing Spark #34
This week, here’s a fragment to get you started:
“Don’t put that there!”
What does that bring to mind? What genre is it being said in? Is anyone listening? Is anyone out there?
Writing Spark #33
Add something fantastical to your storying! Try this:
You must take over your family business: raising dragons to sell to the world’s wealthiest as pets.
Challenge accepted! Go go dragon-raisers! Breed them, train them… sell them. What could possibly go wrong, right?
Writing Spark #32
This week, enjoy the mystery of our prompt:
After falling asleep during history class, you wake up to find your school and town apparently abandoned, for what looks like years.
I love this one. What has happened? Have you travelled in time? Fallen into a lucid dream? Died? Take it wherever you like!
Writing Spark #31
This time, let’s try a quote of dialogue to get you started.
“Stop touching the duck.”
Who is touching a duck, and why? And why must they stop? Who does the duck belong to?
So many options, so little time. Go!
Writing Spark #30
Super-powered stories are popular at the moment, so let’s try one ourselves! Here’s something to get you started:
Someone is stealing super-powers from heroes and villains alike.
Who would do this, and why? How are they doing it? What are they planning to do with the powers they’re stealing?
How far will it take you?
Writing Spark #29
As writers, we are always creating (and often destroying) life. How about a different kind?
A fishing vessel near Antarctica pulls what appears to be a new, humanoid species up in its net.
What sort of species might it be? Is it from Earth or elsewhere? From another planet, or another Earth from another dimension, or some kind of fantastical realm? How did this being come to be in the frigid Antarctic ocean?
So many choices, so little time! Especially if this being isn’t too friendly.
Writing Spark #28
This week, let’s delve into the digital world:
A hacker creates a virtual currency that quickly becomes the dominant system of money on the entire planet.
Is this what the hacker intended, or is it a stunt gone wildly out of control? What’s really behind it, and where will it take those invested in it?
Writing Spark #27
This week, I have something in a thriller/mystery vein to inspire you:
At a Chinese restaurant, you open a fortune cookie and read the following message: “Your life is in danger. Say nothing to anyone. You must leave the city immediately and never return. Repeat: say nothing.”
Who is warning you? Why? And, most importantly, how did they get the message inside a fortune cookie? You have the answers, so use them wisely!
Writing Spark #26
Apologies for the slight gap in these writing prompts. I was flat out sorting the Writers’ Asylum! Now that’s done (for this year), we’re back to our regularly-scheduled Friday prompts.
Here’s our next prompt:
You find out you’re a DNA experiment combining as many recessive genes into one person as possible. That’s why you’ve always felt so different from everyone else.
What recessive genes will you choose? Red hair, blue eyes, an unusual immunity? What happens if they’re all put together? Is it evolution or throwback?
It’s all up to you, so have fun!
Murder in Mind: Challenge #5
(New to Murder in Mind? Head back to our first post to get started!)
It’s getting late when, deep in the hubbub of the party, someone screams.
The music stops abruptly. The lights come up. The faces you have already written about look around the room.
There is an announcement that silences the room for a moment: the host has been killed. No-one is allowed to leave.
What has really happened? How many of the events of the evening were exactly what they seemed? Now is the time to tell us.
Challenge #5: The Final End
